The “Future Ancestors” Library Garden & Learning Center is a collaborative pilot project transforming library grounds into a vibrant, educational green space designed for people, pollinators, & future generations. Led by Rooted Futures Foundation (RFF) in partnership with Friends of the Balch Springs Library, the garden serves as a hands-on environmental learning space rooted in local ecology & community stewardship.
This project brings conservation out of textbooks & into daily life — creating a place where residents can gather, learn, and help restore habitat right in the heart of the community.

Project Purpose…
The project is designed to:
● Support environmental education through hands-on, place-based learning
● Restore & demonstrate native plant ecosystems
● Provide pollinator & urban wildlife habitat
● Offer volunteer & intergenerational learning opportunities
● Strengthen community connection to local land, water, & biodiversity
The goal is not just a garden, but a living classroom & community stewardship hub.
What Makes This Project Different…
Unlike ornamental landscaping, the “Future Ancestors” Project is built using ecological design principles, meaning it:
● Prioritizes native & climate-adapted plants
● Supports soil health, water retention, & biodiversity
● Functions as habitat, not just decoration
● Integrates education & community participation into every phase
It demonstrates how public spaces can be beautiful, functional, & environmentally meaningful at the same time.

How the Project Works…
This is a phased, community-supported project that includes:
● Garden design & ecological planning
● Fundraising & resource coordination
● Volunteer workdays & community involvement
● Educational activities connected to the space
All installed materials & features become part of the library grounds, ensuring long-term community benefit.
Community Involvement…
This project grows through neighbors. Residents can participate by:
● Volunteering during garden workdays
● Donating plants, materials, or resources
● Participating in educational programs
● Sharing knowledge, skills, or local history connected to land & ecology
The garden is built with the community, not just for it.

Why “Future Ancestors”?
The name reflects the idea that the choices we make today shape the world future generations inherit. This project is a small but meaningful act of care — creating habitat, knowledge, & community resilience that extends beyond the present.

3. Help Us Build It — Literally!
The Future Ancestors Library Garden is growing through community collaboration. Many of the systems we’re implementing — native landscapes, edible gardens, rainwater capture, passive infrastructure — rely on donated materials and skilled support. If you’d like to contribute supplies, surplus materials, or equipment, we’ve compiled a running wishlist here:
